Youth and Science – Artificial Photosynthesis in the Pyrenees

| July 21, 2017

Joves i Ciencia (Youth and science) is an educational program involving 50 students between 15-16 years old, ten of which will participate in the artificial photosynthesis project to learn about all the aspects of the field: from Natural photosynthesis to semiconductors physics. The 2 week project is led by academic researchers from the James Durrant’s group (Dr. Laia Francas and Camilo Mesa) and Jenny Nelson’s group (Dr. Davide Moia) at Imperial College London, together with colleagues from EPFL (Dr. Florian Le Formal) and Teesside University (Dr. Anna Reynal). Over the fortnight, the students have the possibility to learn a great deal from these experienced researchers. The learning objectives are to understand some of the processes of natural photosynthesis and to learn to apply these concepts in different artificial systems. The students have the opportunity to learn about the light driven water electrolysis, synthesis and characterisation of molecular and semiconductor catalysts, build a functional UV-Vis spectrometer, prepare dye sensitised solar cells and learn about fuel cells. These are two intense weeks full of new knowledge.
